There comes a time in every Fragrance’s life when it has to go through a reformulation process.

What is a reformulation process?

Every fragrance when originally created has its unique formula that has its unique ingredients (notes) and how they are synthesize to create a scent that we grow to love. However as the years go by (in some case the centuries go by, yes there are fragrances still available that were originally created in 1800s) almost every fragrance gets a reformulation, the manufacturer have to go back to drawing board and try to tweak the original formula to retain as much of the original scent as possible but with a newer formula.

Why do fragrances go through a reformulation?

There are many number of reason why a fragrance would go through a reformulation process, lack of ingredients, new industry regulation, dropping sales and demand, innovation to appeal to broader audiences, and it could also come down to the need of lowering cost in order to maintain profits.

How do we know a fragrance has gone through a reformulation?

In most cases the reformulation process goes unannounced and unnoticed. In other case companies re-launch advertising campaigned to create awareness. It really depends on the brand and how significant the reformulation is.

At Maximum Fragrance we do our best to keep up with reformulation process of as many fragrance as we can. We also make it our mission to stock as many variations of a fragrance as we can, so our customers can enjoy the older or a newer variation of a fragrance if they like. We may always not be able to update the pictures of newer variation but when a new variation is introduce by the manufacturer we will always ship that, unless instructed by our customers. Some fragrance when reformulated will have a new SKU “Stock Keeping Unit” and these will be listed and marked as “New Packaging” on our product page to distinguish them from an older variation of the same fragrance.
